Fantastic interview. It was amusing in some parts that I can relate to. You have a room full of bankers wanting to see 100 logos. Then I stand up and say “Ladies and Gentlemen, this is going to be a very small meeting one way or the other” and I whip out one logo.

    he’s so awesome :P

  • Nkosi868:

It was an objective interview in my opinion. What make you say he comes off as a “douche”?

  • ontemp:

This dumb ass interviewer needs to show more humility and respect for the fantastic Paul Rand. I despise the way he criticizes and dismisses Paul. What a 1990′s douche bag.

  • ontemp:

I agree with you. It’s very right that design is a solution to a utilitarian problem. Art is not solving a solution. Instead, its an expression that has meaning.

  • bhaugart:

    five star

  • 1augh0utL0UD:

He is one of my idols. pure generous///

  • empirenightmare:

Art is more for the actor where as design is for the masses.

A right musician writes music that makes themselves feel. The same goes for actor.

As for designers, its not necessarily what the designer feels as much as the public feels. Nearly everything has to have a function in design. Not so much in art.

I still reckon its art though.

  • royalsteven:

Yes art can have so wide meaning. Culture is art. Culture is any entertainment, life, anything people make or use to delight in theirselfs. Graphical arts, music, food, movies, journalism, videogames. It all takes a creature to make it.

  • swisskorean:

no… new in spanish is NUEVO.

  • djcloudstrife:

hehe forgive my stupidness then delight

  • CharlieKarp:

hey julio, “no va” in Spanish earnings “will not”

  • CharlieKarp:

hey julio, “no va” earnings “will not”

  • djcloudstrife:

its fascinating that you say all these things are not art, but you have no reason for it. what constitutes as art? would you say musicians are not artists? would you say filmmakers are not artists? its fantastic that you have an opinion but something like art can be interpreted in many uncommon ways and may mean something uncommon to everyone. you seem to have a bias for “fine art”.

  • djcloudstrife:

nova in spanish earnings doesn’t go? lol moron…try it earnings “new”

  • StormInk:

Thanks for the video. Nice insight into Rand’s mind.

  • miggsb:

I can hardly write with all this peanut butter in my mouth, but thanks for the complement. It’s all about chatting.

  • YoussefS:

7:20 that was a fantastic moment, i like how raw and real this show is, not remember about those who say your a terrible interviewer, you weren’t interviewing him, you were having a chat.

  • beornborg:

Fantastic interview. It demystified a lot of assumptions I had about Rand’s work.

  • royalsteven:

Aheh so if you really loved an actor’s work and you found out he had terrible hair you wouldn’t like his work anymore? Makes no sense. There’s enough terrible looking nutcase artists. Difference makes uniqueness. And that’s what artists stand for. Anyway, like they said simple design is an gift. I by no means could get the hang of simplicity.

  • archee13:

I reckon this is what a lot of artists struggle to figure out with design…Its potentially right. I’m sure theres a grey area between the two..excellent point tho gazam

  • redibeaver:

Hey Gazam–What do you know about my art? It’s morons like Arabs and Muslims that have no notions about art….for them, lif is dust and goats. Fuckoff

  • hobodivine:

Thank you for posting this interview.
I like Rand… any curve ball you throw him, he’ll bring it back, by no means digresses.

  • GazamYT:

Life is not art. That whole life art thing in itself is moronic. You’re having a dialogue with yourself.

  • GazamYT:

Its not art. BUT fine artists do bring something IF talented and with something deep to bring to design. But its not art. Commercial art maybe but not art as in art.

Rand wasnt as you can see in many of his interviews trying to make some deep meaning about design. Its just clarity, a solution..
Art doesnt involve a solution and sometimes earnings nothing. Design HAS to mean something since its utilitarian.

Rand proves that it perception – art is perception – design is reality.
